The Story

“Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, “Athenians, I see how extremely spiritual you are in every way.  For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. ”

Acts 17. 22

The Coronavirus Pandemic has proven to be one of the greatest challenges to face the Church of England within our lifetime. Regular attendance at Church services have dramatically fallen since the re-opening of church building after Government ‘lockdowns.’ This can be clearly seen throughout the United Kingdom, and this presents significant challenges to the future of our church building and our parish structure. Jesus Christ’s call for his Church remains the same however, in that we are to seek out the lost, the hurt and the persecuted within our communities and to bring them into the love of God so that together we can be healed of this woundedness and brokenness; so that each of us grow into our unique potential which is to become like God. Our ministry then, of prayer and the sacraments remain vital to our local community. Every effort then, needs to be made to ensure our survival, especially the light of the challenges we are facing at this moment in time.

As the Church of St Mary Magdalen, we believe we are called to meet people where they are in order to open up conversations about our lives and our faith in God, but in a manner in which people feel safe and comfortable. If people are not coming into our building, then we need to go out and meet people where they are. Our Parish is filled with young people at University, young professionals, families with young children and of course older people who have been living here all their lives. St Mary Magdalen Church is for them and for us as well.

In view of this, the PCC embarked on ambitious challenge in 2022 called The Blue Roof Coffee Project. After a very generous anonymous donation, and with the support of the Diocesan Mission Fund, we purchased 'Lazarus' the coffee van.

This project affords us the opportunity to meet people where they are, to hear them and learn about their needs and concerns, and we hope that in some small way we can bring the love of God into their hearts through our encounters in Holy Spirit.

Our Coffee

We are extremely proud to be supported by CLO Coffee, who lovingly prepare our beautiful coffee beans.

Here is what owners Linda and Nick have to say:

We were born out of a desire for connection. In 2008, we made a decision to exchange career dissatisfaction for a growing heart to see loneliness decrease and cohesion increase within our local area. We do this, through coffee.
